What’s in a name? Why Dark Horizon

Some of you have asked about the name Dark Horizon Diving and why I picked such a ‘dark’ name (pun intended). So, here we go.

About ten or so years ago I took the picture on the right whilst on a Red Sea liveaboard watching the sunrise and waiting for the first dive of the day. Ever since, it’s been one of my favourites – and my smart phone screen saver (yes, I am a creature of habit).

Whilst thinking about a name for my own shop, I kept returning to this very image. A few weeks later, the same image – alongside a rather terrible drawing – was sent to the very talented Indonesian graphic designer who helped me with the logo. That is how this dark horizon of the Red Sea being touched by the rising sun became the basis of the logo at the top of this page.

Sunsets and sunrises are some of my favourite things to watch, although admittedly I catch more sunsets than sunrises. And they come with a dark horizon. So, to me dark horizons are connected to some of the most beautiful views I’ve ever seen.

Underwater, especially as technical divers, we tend to venture further. Whether this means going deeper or entering an overhead environment, there is usually a moment when our underwater environment turns darker. This could be caused by a thermocline or by moving past the lightzone. To me, it signifies extending our horizons as divers, training and exploring that little bit further. Not scary, but challenging and exciting at the same time.
